Supported by more than 40 years of research, development and teaching, this book provides a comprehensive treatment of all relevant aspects in wet cake filtration as a key method in solid-liquid-separation.
The first part of the book discusses general principles and applications of wet cake filtration, determination of proper feed streams and filter cake formation. The next chapters deal with variations of pre-treatment and process conditions including necessary aspects of lab scale tests, up-scaling and filter design. This is further strengthened with chapters discussing particle purification, yield maximization and cake deliquoring ? the removal of the liquid phase. Lastly, the filter media is discussed as the central piece of wet cake filtration. Beside the different possibilities of available filter media structures and process relevant aspects of filter media selection, the reliable characterization of pore sizes by porometry and innovative additional functionalities are introduced.

Harald Anlauf is Academic Director of the department "Process Machines" at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics in Karlsruhe, Germany. Having obtained his academic degrees in Chemical Engineering from the former Technical University of Karlsruhe (today KIT) he spent his career at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics since 1979. In this Institute his field of activity comprises research, administration and teaching in the field of Mechanical Process Engineering and especially solid-liquid separation, mixing and agglomeration technology. From 1999 - 2005 he was Chairman of the German VDI/GVC working party "Mechanical Liquid Separation". Since 1999 he is German Delegate of INDEFI (International Delegate on Filtration and Separation) and was 2008 President of the 10th World Filtration Congress (WFC) in Leipzig, Germany. Since 2000 he is Co-Chairman of the FILTECH Scientific Committee. He got amongst other 2006 the "Senior Scientist Award" (recognizing significant contributions to the technology of filtration and separation) of the American Filtration Society (AFS) and published as author or co-author 195 papers and book chapters. He is still internationally active in consulting and lecturing.
