MOR provides annual statistical data of operating results of retail stores. Each annual edition represents the results of a survey of retail companies—for example, the 1994 edition represents companies whose total sales volume was $48.5 billion. The survey offers overall trends in sales, merchandising and inventory, inventory productivity, and space productivity (e.g., sales per square foot) in department stores and specialty stores. MOR also provides specific data on these trends, by merchandise category (e.g., female apparel, cosmetics & drugs, leisure & home electronics, and home furnishings). Data is provided on monthly sales distribution, monthly markdowns, and stock sales ratios. NRF successfully self-published MOR for 68 years, selling between 500 and 700 copies each year, at $75 to $150 per copy, with very little marketing.
