Dorothy J. Scrivner Blum, Ed.D., is an experienced school counselor, high school guidance director, administrator of school counseling, and counselor educator with a doctorate degree in Counselor Education from the University of Virginia, and other degrees from the University of Nebraska (M.M.) and Midland College (A.B.). She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a National Certified School Counselor (NCSC). Currently she is the Development Relations Coordinator for the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
Dr. Blum has recently retired as Coordinator of the Elementary School Counseling and Guidance Program of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in Virginia. In this position she was the counseling supervisor for 176 elementary school counselors in 132 elementary schools. Previous to this position she was the Guidance Director at George C. Marshall High School, FCPS, for ten years.
This author has received the 1995 Virginia Career Service Award from the Virginia Counselors Association, the 1994 Post-Secondary Counselor of the Year Award from the Virginia Scholl Counselor Associations, the 1993 Distinguished Group Work Award from the Virginia Association for Specialist of Group Work, the 1988 Counselor of the Year Award from the Virginia Counselor association, the 1985 Chapter Member of the Year Award from the Northern Virginia Counselor Association, and the 1984 Secondary School Counselor of the Year Award form the Virginia School Counselor Association.
Dr. Blum has taught graduate courses in school counseling for the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Western Maryland College, and currently is teaching as an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University. She is the author of the book, Group Counseling for Secondary Schools (1990, Charles Thomas) and has written chapters included in the books: Quality Leadership and the Professional School counselor (1994, American Counselor Association), and Contemporary Counseling (1987, Accelerated Development). She has also written numerous articles published in professional journals.
Dorothy Blum has presented workshops for school counselors at conferences of the American Counselors Association (ACA), the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), state and university conferences, and has been a consultant for school counselors in the American Schools of Central America, Mexico, Colombia, and the Caribbean.
